 You can only be
sure of transferring
credits to an American college if they were awarded by a school which is
accredited by a regional American college accrediting association.
Commercial companies with
names like Centers, Institutes, or Academies may not necessarily be
accredited American colleges. Ask them. They are sometimes affiliated
with foreign schools.
While a few foreign
schools are accredited here, we don't think you should count on
transferring credits from any foreign school unless you took
them as part of a study-abroad program offered by a good four-year
American college in the United States. Courses taken abroad in these
programs have the same value as courses taught on the home campus.
Otherwise forget about it.
 You
don't always have to be in
an American program to take language classes at a foreign university.
The famous French language program at the University of Paris (Sorbonne)
is open to any American with a high school diploma who can pay the
bursar $1100 per semester for 12.5 class hours a week. The University of
Vienna offers a similar course in German.
Some students in the
classroom may have signed up for the course on their own. Others sitting
nearby may be taking it as part of an American college study-abroad
program. You may or may not be able to transfer credit for the course
from the American college, but they are paying expensive American
tuition for that privilege
If you want to be in
Europe, we think that the ACCORD program is a good way to go. You may or
may not get credit. Your tuition will be cheaper. You will earn a salary
and live with a family.
